CAPE GIRARDEAU -- The City of Cape Girardeau's annual spring cleanup is scheduled for next week, April 17-21. Homeowners are looking forward to the opportunity to eliminate all the crap that has accumulated in the attic. Meanwhile, since "One man's trash is another man's treasure", other people are looking forward to the opportunity to pick up free stuff conveniently located at the curb.

Nobody wants to admit that they pick through the junk piles, but lots of people do it. Traffic on residential streets should increase next week as junkfinders go on the prowl for valuable stuff -- hopefully before another junkfinder has already been there.

This annual activity might be looked down upon as "pilfering", but the people who should really be ashamed are the homeowners who throw out quality stuff. Instead of sending this stuff on its way to occupy landfill space, it could be sold at yard sales or on eBay, or, at the very least, donated to a charitable organization.

I've already spotted several piles of junk around town. Get that pickup truck ready -- it's time to go junkin'.
